C-Section Delivery Errors

San Antonio Birth Injury Lawyers

A Cesarean section, also known as a C-section, is a major surgical procedure in which the doctor delivers the baby through incisions made in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. The surgery is one of the most common operations in the United States—in fact, an estimated 20% of all childbirths are handled this way. Unfortunately, just because C-sections are prevalent does not mean that they’ll always go smoothly.

While certain issues may be out of anyone’s control, medical negligence can result in C-section delivery errors and injuries to a mother and her child. Attorneys at the Tom Rhodes Law Firm P.C. have been in practice for over 30 years now and represent families all across the United States who have been injured due to a doctor’s failures.

C-Section Delivery Errors

There are two primary types of medical negligence that involve C-section errors: delayed delivery and medical errors.

  • Delayed delivery: The most common injuries associated with a C-section aren’t caused by the incision, but by the delayed decision to perform surgery. If a doctor does not recognize the complications of a vaginal delivery soon enough, the baby can suffer injuries and oxygen deprivation, which can result in brain damage.
  • Medical errors: In some cases, a doctor may injure a child while performing surgery. According to research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 1.1% out of 37,100 C-section deliveries had fetal injuries. These injuries include skin lacerations, disruption of blood vessels, clavicle fractures, brachial plexus injuries, skull fractures and damage to the facial nerves and muscles.

Birth Injuries

If a C-section error does occur, it can result in any number of serious injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, jaundice, fractures and subconjunctival hemorrhages. If the infant is deprived of oxygen during a botched C-section, they may suffer serious and irreversible brain damage and develop conditions such as epilepsy and cerebral palsy.
