Merritt Clements

“The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena.” - Teddy Roosevelt

For thirty years, Merritt Clements, a fifth generation San Antonian, represented railroads, insurers, trucking companies, manufacturers, contractors, hospitals, school districts, lawyers, doctors, utilities, government entities, banks and other businesses in lawsuits in central and south Texas. In 2017, Clements resigned his position as a partner in a large corporate firm and joined Tom Rhodes Law Firm in order to concentrate on serving individuals.

Clements has tried dozens of cases to verdict in state and federal courts, and handled a number of appeals. He has made several presentations to other attorneys regarding trial techniques. Clements has been recognized by Best Lawyers as among the best lawyers in the United States and as a “Texas Super Lawyer” by Thomson Reuters. He holds a rating of “AV (Preeminent)” from Martidale-Hubbell, the highest rating issued by that recognized authority.

Clements earned his bachelor’s degree and law degree from the University of Texas. He is admitted to practice in Texas and the District of Columbia. His service to the bar includes having been a member of the committee responsible for considering client grievances against attorneys. He is a member of the San Antonio Trial Lawyers Association and the Texas Trial Lawyers Association.

Clements has also served on the Vestry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and as a volunteer, officer and director of several other non-profit organizations. He is presently active in Kairos Prison Ministry and a member of the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of South Texas.

Clements and his wife Karen, a professor at St. Mary’s University Law School, have two sons.
