By 2017, there may be over 250,000 unoccupied trucker positions. Of course,
this has led many truck companies panicking to find individuals willing
to drive their big rigs. Recently, truck companies and Congress have made
efforts to have the legal interstate truck driving age lowered to 18 years
old. However, many fear that if this law passes, these young, inexperienced
drivers may increase the risk of dangerous road conditions and likelihood
of fatal truck accidents.
Currently, 48 states permit 18-year-olds to drive these 80,000-pound big
rig vehicles within state boundaries so long as they do not cross over
the borders of other states. This has led the representatives from the
American Trucking Association to become tempted to allow these young individuals
to drive nationally. Many feel as though the lower age requirements will
fix the unfilled trucker position problem that continues to grow.
Research shows that in 2012, drivers between the ages of 16 to 19 years
old caused 60% of car accident fatalities. Because this statistic is so
high, many people fear that lowering the interstate truck driving age
can lead to more trucking accidents since inexperienced drivers many not
react to certain road or traffic conditions in appropriate manners. The
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety adds that regardless of the type
of training these young drivers will be required to undergo, the safety
of passenger vehicle motorists will remain at risk due to the lack of
experience of these younger and newer drivers.
