Causes of Nursing Home Neglect and Abuse

• Inadequate hydration and nutrition can lead to unnecessary weight loss, poor health or death.
• Bed sores (also called pressure sores or pressure ulcers) can develop if bedridden patients aren't repositioned every two hours.
• Some residents are restrained when they should not be.
• Physical or sexual assault by other residents or employees of the nursing home is more common than many would like to believe.
• Falling accidents are a common result of a nursing home's failure to assess a resident's fall risk and implement a fall prevention plan.
• Nursing medication errors can result in serious consequences from dispensing the wrong medication or the wrong does.
• Fraud in charting is common. A chart may indicate a resident's medications were given and meals were eaten on days when the resident was not at the nursing home. We have handled cases where nursing home employees have testified that they were given stacks of charts to take home over the weekend and told to fill in the blanks.
