Auto Insurance Requirements in Texas
San Antonio Car Accident Attorneys Explain
Texas state law requires all drivers to carry some form of auto insurance,
and also for that insurance to cover a minimum amount, at least liability
coverage. This insurance will cover the costs of damages if the driver
is found to be at-fault for the accident. Having the minimum on your policy
is not only required by law, but can also give you piece of mind.
The Minimum Coverage Limits
Every driver must also carry proof of coverage in his or her vehicle, including
registration. This is important, for example, if you were stopped by a
police officer and they asked to view your proof of insurance. Without
an insurance policy in place, you could be fined $350.
These are Texas state requirements for auto insurance coverage:
- Liability coverage for bodily injury: $30, 000 per person; $60, 000 per accident
- Liability coverage for property damage: $25, 000
- Uninsured motorist, bodily injury: $30, 000 per person; $60, 000 per accident
- Uninsured motorist, property damage: $25, 000; $250 deductible; can decline
- Personal injury protection (PIP): $2, 500; can decline this option
You can also opt to purchase higher limits on our policy, or even purchase
full coverage insurance. Full coverage insurance means that it will include
comprehensive coverage and
collision coverage. These types of coverage can cover you in the event of some disaster or
other incident where you were not at fault, e.g. if your car was stolen.
Another option to cover medical payments that you or any others traveling with you.
