  • Tom Rhodes Law Firm Secures Substantial Medical Malpractice Verdict for Permanently Injured Patient

    October 24, 2017

Tom Rhodes Law Firm secured a substantial medical malpractice verdict against a San Antonio doctor and his employer for failing to administer thiamine after a bariatric surgery and prevent Wernicke’s syndrome, a serious neurological disorder.

After experiencing vomiting following a successful gastric bypass surgery, our client was admitted to the hospital, diagnosed with a number of symptoms, and was unable to retain vitamins and nutrients. A dietitian acknowledged her high risk for malnutrition and recommended TPN, a method of feeding used when patients cannot receive food by mouth, and which would have included thiamine (vitamin B1).

Despite developing various concerning symptoms, the attending physician failed to order any vitamins or nutrients, including the TPN, and discharged our client from the hospital. Within a week, she returned to the hospital, where her condition declined and she eventually became comatose for a period of time. As a result of failing to administer thiamine per standards of care and the dietician’s recommendation, our client suffered catastrophic and permanent injuries, and currently resides in a nursing home.
